If God is love, that means…

How do you see God? Who is He to you? For me those answers are always changing as my relationship with Him deepens. I often as God to show me who He is in new ways. Today this is what he revealed to me.

If “God is love” (1 John 4:16) and “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps not record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13: 4-8). – Then that can only mean, GOD is patient, GOD is kind. Our Father does not envy, does not boast, is not proud. God does not dishonor others, He is not self-seeking, He is not easily angered, He keeps no record of wrongs. Our Father who art in Heaven does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. GOD. NEVER. FAILS.

I have always looked at this scripture from my perspective. “Lauren is patients, Lauren is kind…..” you get the picture. While that is a good way to challenge myself and reflect on what I need to work on to become more like my perfect Father, this morning God revealed to me that this is a scripture about HIM and His flawless character. This helped me see Him in a totally new way! Of course, I believed the basics about Him in that verse like He is patient, kind, protective, never failing, truthful, fill in the blank. BUT some things that challenged my thinking were: He keeps no record of wrongs? He believes the best in me? He is not does not envy, does not boast, is not proud? He does not dishonor others? He is not self-seeking? He always trusts? Always hopes? Always perseveres?

It hit me. All of these characteristics were modeled by the perfect trinity that is God in the Bible. God keeps no record of wrongs because all our sins were erased with the sacrifice of the perfect lamb – Jesus. Because of that, we are now one of his children that he is full of hope for and believes the best in us. Trust is the same thing is faithful and he is faithful even when I am not. He is not self-seeking, in fact He is the opposite. He is seeking after us!!! There is not god like him. He is so holy and set apart because of this. He does not boast about himself. He is telling the truth. Facts when speaking of himself. He does not dishonor others. When people meet devastation, it is the result of sin in this world. He hates sin because it causes us pain. Obedience = protection. His instructions are rooted in a greater purpose than our little minds can understand. And his purpose always has our best in mind. He never gives up on us. Story after story in the Bible proves that.
